Position Overview

This is a National Guard Title 32 Excepted Service position for an Airplane Pilot (Position Description Number D0253P02) with the OK 138th Fighter Wing, Oklahoma Air National Guard. The primary purpose of this role is to pilot unit-equipped (UE) aircraft and perform essential administrative tasks in support of the Air Operations program.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent operates advanced single or multi-engine military aircraft, including high-performance fighter jets, on tactical and non-tactical missions. Responsibilities include:

  • Flight Operations: Executing precision instrument flight techniques, conducting mission planning, verifying weight and balance, ensuring crew briefings, and maintaining aircraft systems knowledge.
  • Safety and Supervision: Serving as the Supervisor of Flying (SOF), with the authority to direct emergency actions, divert aircraft, and coordinate airspace utilization. Ensuring compliance with safety directives (OSHA, Air Force, and ANG).
  • Administrative Leadership: Supporting functional areas including Training and Scheduling, Operational Planning, Safety Programs, and Inspector General activities. This involves designing training plans, maintaining wartime/peacetime contingency plans, and managing self-assessment programs.
  • Post-Flight Documentation: Maintaining flight logs, writing reports, and coordinating service conditions with maintenance personnel.

Required Qualifications

  • Military Membership: Must maintain active membership in the Oklahoma Air National Guard in a compatible military assignment.
  • Education: A mandatory undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university. A graduate degree is considered optimal.
  • Certification/Training: Must be a graduate of USAF or USN Undergraduate Flying Training (UFT). Must possess FAA pilot certificates or appropriate military aviation certifications.
  • Experience: Must possess specialized experience as outlined in GS-2181-13 standards, including at least two years of experience in civilian or military aviation programs and proficiency in piloting/instructing in main-frame military aircraft.
  • Medical and Physical: Must maintain the same medical standards as USAF military pilots. Must hold a valid state driver's license and qualify to operate government motor vehicles.
  • Security: Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance for access to classified information.

Conditions of Employment

  • Acceptance of an excepted service position requires ongoing military membership and the wearing of the military uniform.
  • Must be registered for Selective Service (for males born after 31 December 1959).
  • Subject to a background investigation and potential trial or probationary period of up to two years.
  • Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
  • Must be available for travel by military or commercial air.
  • Must be available for non-standard duty hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.

Military Grades

Eligible military grades for this position are O-1 through O-4.
