Airplane Pilot
Position Overview:
This is a National Guard Title 32 Excepted Service, non-bargaining unit position. The role is for an Airplane Pilot (Position Description Number D0253P02) with the Montana Air National Guard, 120 OSS.
Duties and Responsibilities
The incumbent serves as an Airplane Pilot for advanced, single or multi-engine military aircraft and high-performance tactical fighter aircraft. Responsibilities include executing tactical and non-tactical missions using precision instrument flight techniques, conducting point-to-point domestic and foreign flights, and maintaining comprehensive knowledge of aircraft systems under all flight conditions.
Key operational duties include:

Performing thorough pre-flight planning, including weather analysis, route mapping, fuel requirements, weight and balance verification, and crew briefings.

Operating aircraft in strict adherence to flight manuals, coordinating with ground and controlling units, and managing flight progress with a focus on safety.

Completing post-flight documentation, including logs, forms, and maintenance coordination.

Serving as the Air Commander’s representative when performing duties as Supervisor of Flying (SOF).
Administrative and Program Support:
Incumbents may rotate through functional areas including Training and Scheduling, Plans, Safety, and the Inspector General’s office. Duties include designing training scenarios, developing wartime/peacetime contingency plans, administering explosive and ground safety programs, and managing the Commander’s Inspection Program (CCIP).
Requirements and Qualifications

Military Membership:
Membership in the Montana Air National Guard is required. Applicants must be eligible for immediate military membership and must be able to wear the military uniform.

Military Grade:
O4/Maj - O5/Lt Col.

AFSC Qualification:
Must be AFSC qualified in 11M3C or able to qualify within six months of hire.

Education:
Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university is required (transcripts must be submitted).

Certification:
Must hold FAA certifications from an accredited civilian program OR aviation certifications from an accredited military aviation school.

Experience:
Must possess a minimum of two years of specialized experience in aviation programs (civilian, active duty, or reserve components). Experience must include piloting or instructing in specified military aircraft, mission planning, and administrative aviation support.

Medical:
Must maintain the medical standards required for USAF military pilots.

Training:
Graduation from USAF or USN Undergraduate Flying Training (UFT) is required.
Conditions of Employment

Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance.

Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.

Must be registered for Selective Service (for males born after 31 December 1959).

Work may require travel and irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Federal employment suitability, including a background investigation, is required.
