Position Overview

This is a National Guard Title 32 Excepted Service non-bargaining unit position for an Airplane Pilot (Position Description Number D0253P02) with the Montana Air National Guard, 120 OSS.

Role and Responsibilities

The selected pilot operates advanced, single or multi-engine military aircraft, including high-performance fighter aircraft, on tactical and non-tactical missions using precision instrument flight techniques. Responsibilities include:

  • Executing flight procedures and standard maneuvers across all weather conditions while maintaining thorough knowledge of aircraft systems and emergency protocols.
  • Preparing for flight missions, including weather analysis, route planning, fuel requirement calculations, weight and balance verification, and preflight inspections.
  • Ensuring passenger and crew safety through comprehensive briefings and obtaining necessary flight clearances.
  • Performing post-flight activities, including log maintenance, reporting, and coordination with maintenance personnel.
  • Serving as the Air Commander’s representative as Supervisor of Flying (SOF), ensuring safe and efficient mission accomplishment.
  • Rotating into administrative support roles in Training and Scheduling, Plans, Safety, or the Inspector General office as required.

Qualifications and Requirements

Military and Certification Requirements

  • Must be a member of the Montana Air National Guard.
  • Military Grades: O4/Maj - O5/Lt Col.
  • Must be AFSC qualified in 11M3C or able to qualify within 6 months of hire.
  • Must be a graduate of USAF or USN Undergraduate Flying Training (UFT).
  • Must possess Federal Aviation Administration certifications or aviation certifications from an accredited military aviation school.
  • Must maintain medical standards equivalent to USAF military pilots.

Education and Experience

  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university is required (transcripts must be submitted).
  • Must demonstrate a competent understanding of basic aviation principles and concepts.
  • Minimum of two years of specialized experience in civilian or military aviation programs, or Air National Guard/Army National Guard aviation support facilities.
  • Detailed experience in mission planning, crew training, aircraft inspection, flight instruction, and safety program management is required.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must wear the military uniform.
  • Must obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance.
  • Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Employment is contingent upon federal suitability and background investigations.
  • Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
  • Work may require travel and flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • External applicants must be able to commence employment within six months of selection.
