Position Summary
The Airplane Pilot is responsible for flying advanced, single or multi-engine military aircraft, including high-performance fighter aircraft, on both tactical and non-tactical missions. The incumbent utilizes precision instrument flight techniques and maintains a comprehensive knowledge of aircraft systems under normal, instrument, and emergency conditions. This position is a non-bargaining unit, Title 32 Excepted Service role within the Montana Air National Guard.
Core Duties and Responsibilities

Conduct pre-flight preparations, including weather analysis, route planning, weight and balance verification, and crew/passenger briefings.

Execute flight operations while adhering to technical manual parameters, maintaining effective communication with ground units, and ensuring operational safety.

Complete post-flight requirements, including log maintenance, reporting, and coordination with maintenance personnel.

Serve as the Air Commander’s representative when performing Supervisor of Flying (SOF) duties.

Perform rotational administrative tasks in functional areas including Training and Scheduling, Plans, Safety, and Inspector General support.

Military Membership:
National Guard membership is mandatory. Applicants must either currently be members or be eligible for immediate membership in the Montana Air National Guard.

Uniform Requirements:
Selectees must wear the military uniform.

Security Clearance:
Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance; work may involve access to classified information.

Medical Standards:
Must maintain the same medical standards as USAF military pilots.

Availability:
Must be available to work non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Travel for conferences and meetings may be required.

Compliance:
Mandatory participation in direct deposit; compliance with Selective Service registration (for males born after 31 December 1959).
Qualifications
Education and Certification

Degree:
Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university (transcripts required).

UFT:
Graduation from USAF or USN Undergraduate Flying Training (UFT).

Aviation Certification:
Must possess FAA certifications or certifications from an accredited military aviation school.

AFSC:
Must be AFSC qualified in 11M3C or able to qualify within six months of hire.
Experience

General Experience:
Demonstrated understanding of basic aviation principles and concepts.

Specialized Experience:
Minimum of two years of experience in civilian or military aviation programs (active duty, reserve, or National Guard).

Technical Proficiency:
Documented experience in piloting and instructing specific main-frame military aircraft, mission planning, crew briefing, navigation, in-flight refueling, and the application of flight theory and meteorology.

Administrative and Safety:
Proven experience in unit safety programs (OSHA/Air Force directives), quality control management, and the development of operational plans and policies.
