Position Summary

The Air National Guard is seeking an Airplane Pilot (Accelerated Hire), GS-2181-13, to join the Operations Group. This is a T32 Excepted Service position that may be permanent, indefinite, or temporary. The primary responsibility involves piloting unit-equipped (UE) aircraft and performing administrative tasks to support the Air Operations program.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Pilot unit-equipped (UE) aircraft for assigned missions.
  • Perform and manage administrative functions in support of air operations.
  • Conduct mission planning, flight plan filing, and crew briefings.
  • Perform aircraft preflight inspections, loading procedures, and equipment assessments.
  • Supervise and execute procedures for navigation, in-flight refueling, search and rescue, or surveillance/reconnaissance.
  • Train crew members on mission-specific tasks.
  • Advise commanders and develop plans, policies, and safety programs in accordance with DOD, NGB, and OSHA regulations.

Requirements and Qualifications

Military Membership: Membership in the California National Guard is mandatory. Selectees must hold a compatible military grade (O-1 through O-6) and assignment. Candidates must wear the military uniform and adhere to grooming standards.

General Experience: Must possess a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification from an accredited civilian program or an aviation certification from an accredited military aviation school, plus one year of on-the-job experience in the grade or comparable rank immediately below the next higher level.

Specialized Experience (GS-13): Must possess at least 36 months of specialized experience in the following areas:

  • Operating specific main-frame military aircraft.
  • Mission planning, preparation, and analysis of intelligence/weather data.
  • Flight theory, air navigation, meteorology, and flying directives.
  • Supervision of flight operations, safety programs, and crew training.

Conditions of Employment

  • Maintain appropriate security clearance level.
  • Maintain compatible military unit, grade, and job assignment.
  • Mandatory participation in direct deposit.
  • Must register with the Military Selective Service Act (if applicable).
  • Recruitment/Relocation incentives and PCS costs may be authorized subject to funding and agency determination.

Education and Certification

Proof of FAA or accredited military aviation certification is required at the time of application. Transcripts or certificates must be provided; failure to submit these documents will result in automatic disqualification. Only education from institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education is accepted. Foreign education must be formally evaluated for U.S. equivalence.
