Position Overview

This is a National Guard Title 32 Excepted Service position for an Airplane Pilot (Position Description Number D0253P02) within the Oklahoma Air National Guard, 138th Fighter Wing. The primary objective is to pilot unit-equipped (UE) aircraft while performing essential administrative tasks in support of the Air Operations program.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent is responsible for piloting advanced single or multi-engine military aircraft, including high-performance fighter aircraft, on tactical and non-tactical missions. Responsibilities include:

  • Executing flight procedures using advanced precision instrument techniques and navigation aids.
  • Conducting comprehensive flight planning, including weather analysis, route navigation, weight distribution, and crew briefings.
  • Operating aircraft with a focus on safety, including monitoring performance and initiating corrective or emergency actions.
  • Completing post-flight documentation, maintenance coordination, and reporting.
  • Serving as the Supervisor of Flying (SOF), acting as the Air Commander’s representative with the authority to manage mission requirements and airspace utilization.
  • Performing administrative functions within functional areas such as Training and Scheduling, Operations Planning, Safety Programs, and Inspector General support.

Qualifications and Requirements

Mandatory Qualifications:

  • Must hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Graduation from USAF or USN Undergraduate Flying Training (UFT).
  • Must possess Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certifications or equivalent military aviation certifications/ratings in the mainframe military aircraft of employment.
  • Minimum of two years of specialized experience in aviation programs (civilian, active duty, reserve, or National Guard).
  • Must be eligible for and maintain membership in the Oklahoma Air National Guard.
  • Military Grades: O-1 through O-4.
  • Must maintain medical standards equivalent to USAF military pilots.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance.
  • Required to wear the military uniform.
  • Valid state driver’s license required for government vehicle operation.
  • Must register for Selective Service (males born after December 31, 1959).
  • Subject to federal background investigations and potential trial or probationary periods.
  • Work schedule may require evenings, weekends, and holidays; travel may be required.

Professional Competencies

The ideal candidate possesses extensive experience in flight theory, meteorology, air navigation, and mission tactics. Proficiency in unit quality control, safety program administration, and Operational Risk Management is essential. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to train and instruct other pilots and maintain a deep understanding of wartime and peacetime contingency planning.
