Position Overview

This is a National Guard Title 32 Excepted Service position for an Airplane Pilot (Position Description Number D0253P02) with the OK 138th Fighter Wing, Oklahoma Air National Guard. The primary purpose of this role is to pilot unit-equipped (UE) aircraft while performing administrative tasks in support of the Air Operations program.

Key Responsibilities

  • Pilot advanced, single or multi-engine military aircraft on tactical and non-tactical missions using precision instrument flight techniques.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of aircraft systems and execute flight procedures under normal, instrument, and emergency conditions.
  • Perform pre-flight preparations, including weather briefings, flight planning, fuel calculation, and aircraft inspection.
  • Ensure operational safety, communicate with ground control, and coordinate mission progress.
  • Complete post-flight activities, including logbook maintenance, flight reports, and coordination with maintenance personnel.
  • Serve as the Supervisor of Flying (SOF), representing the Air Commander with the authority to manage mission requirements, divert aircraft, and direct emergency actions.
  • Participate in administrative support functional areas, including Training and Scheduling, Operational Planning, Safety Program management, and Inspector General duties.

Qualifications and Requirements

Mandatory Qualifications

  • Current membership in the National Guard is required.
  • Must hold the military grade of O-1 through O-4.
  • Graduate of USAF or USN Undergraduate Flying Training (UFT).
  • Possess an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Must possess Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certifications or appropriate military aviation certifications.
  • Maintain medical standards equivalent to USAF military pilots.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance.
  • Valid state driver’s license.

Specialized Experience

Candidates must demonstrate at least two years of specialized experience in aviation programs within civilian, active duty, reserve, or National Guard settings. Required competencies include, but are not limited to:

  • Expertise in piloting and instructing others in specific military aircraft.
  • Proficiency in mission planning, crew briefings, and aircraft preflight inspections.
  • Experience in aviation unit quality control and safety programs (OSHA/Air Force directives).
  • Knowledge of operational directives, air navigation, meteorology, and combat tactics.
  • Ability to manage and implement training plans and unit flying schedules.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must maintain compatibility with military assignment in the National Guard.
  • Requirement to wear the military uniform and participate in direct deposit.
  • Subject to a background investigation and potential trial or probationary period.
  • May require travel by military or commercial air.
  • Availability to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered for Selective Service.
