Position Overview

This is a National Guard Title 32 Excepted Service position for an Airplane Pilot (Position Description Number D0253P02) with the OK 138th Fighter Wing, Oklahoma Air National Guard. The primary purpose of this role is to pilot unit-equipped (UE) aircraft while performing essential administrative tasks in support of the Air Operations program.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Pilot advanced, single or multi-engine military aircraft, including high-performance fighter aircraft, on tactical and non-tactical missions using precision instrument flight techniques.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of aircraft systems, emergency procedures, and mission qualifications.
  • Execute comprehensive flight preparations, including weather analysis, route planning, fuel requirement calculations, aircraft inspections, and crew briefings.
  • Operate aircraft with an emphasis on safety, adhering to flight manuals, coordinating with ground control, and managing in-flight progress.
  • Perform post-flight duties, including maintaining aircraft logs, filing reports, and coordinating with maintenance personnel.
  • Serve as the Air Commander’s representative when performing Supervisor of Flying (SOF) duties, overseeing the safe and efficient execution of unit missions.
  • Perform rotational administrative duties across various Air Operations functional areas, including Training and Scheduling, Operations Planning, Safety Program administration, and Inspector General support.

Qualifications and Requirements

Mandatory Prerequisites

  • Must be a member of the National Guard or eligible for immediate membership in a compatible military assignment.
  • Military Grades: O-1 through O-4.
  • Graduation from USAF or USN Undergraduate Flying Training (UFT).
  • Possession of Federal Aviation Administration pilot certificates or appropriate military certifications/ratings in the main-frame military aircraft of employment.
  • Completion of an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance for access to classified information.
  • Must maintain medical standards equivalent to USAF military pilots.
  • Valid state driver’s license and ability to qualify for government motor vehicle operations.

Specialized Experience

Candidates must demonstrate at least two years of specialized experience in aviation programs (civilian or military). This includes demonstrated competency in:

  • Piloting and instructing pilot skills in fixed-wing, rotary, or remotely piloted aircraft.
  • Mission planning, crew briefing, and aircraft preflight inspections.
  • Developing plans, policies, and training curricula.
  • Safety program management in compliance with Department of the Air Force and OSHA directives.
  • Application of operational directives, flight theory, meteorology, and tactical mission execution.

Conditions of Employment

  • This is a Dual Status technician position; maintenance of military membership is a condition of employment.
  • Requirement to wear the military uniform.
  • Must be registered for Selective Service (for males born after 31 December 1959).
  • Subject to federal background investigations and potential trial or probationary periods.
  • Mandatory participation in direct deposit.
  • Position may require irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Travel via military or commercial air may be required.

Education

An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution is required. A graduate degree from an accredited college or professional military education school is preferred.
