Airplane Pilot (Accelerated Hire) - GS-2181-13

The Air National Guard (ANG) Aviation Wing, Operations Group, 144th Fighter Wing (CA 144 FW), is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Airplane Pilot (Accelerated Hire). This position involves piloting unit-equipped aircraft and performing administrative functions to support the Air Operations program.

Position Overview

This is a T32 Excepted Service position that may be filled on a permanent, indefinite, or temporary basis. Indefinite selectees may be eligible for non-competitive conversion to permanent status contingent upon funding and position availability. Temporary positions may be extended for up to four years in accordance with applicable regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Pilot unit-equipped (UE) aircraft for assigned missions.
  • Perform and manage administrative tasks in support of the Air Operations program.
  • Conduct mission planning, preparation, and briefings.
  • Review and analyze mission tasking, intelligence, and meteorological data.
  • Perform aircraft preflight inspections, equipment assessments, and loading procedures.
  • Execute and supervise navigation, in-flight refueling, search and rescue, and reconnaissance operations.
  • Develop plans, policies, and monitor operations while advising commanders.
  • Train crew members on mission-specific tasks.
  • Ensure compliance with safety programs and flying directives from the Department of Defense, National Guard Bureau, and OSHA.

Requirements and Conditions of Employment

  • Membership Requirement: Applicants must be or become members of the California National Guard. A compatible military assignment and grade (O-1 through O-6) are mandatory.
  • Uniform and Appearance: Selectees are required to wear the military uniform and adhere to official grooming standards.
  • Security: Candidates must maintain the appropriate level of security clearance.
  • Financial: Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
  • Eligibility: Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must be registered with the Selective Service.

Qualifications

General Experience: Candidates must possess a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification from an accredited civilian program or an aviation certification from an accredited military aviation school, plus one year of on-the-job experience in the grade immediately below the target level.

Specialized Experience (GS-13): Candidates must demonstrate at least 36 months of specialized experience in operating specific main-frame military aircraft. Expertise must include flight theory, air navigation, meteorology, mission tactics, and operating procedures.

Education and Certification

Submission of unofficial transcripts and/or certifications is required at the time of application to verify credentials. Only institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education are accepted. Foreign education must be evaluated by a recognized private organization to determine U.S. equivalency.
