Job Purpose

The Airline Captain assumes ultimate responsibility for conducting assigned flights in strict adherence to the detailed provisions of the Airline Operational Manual and all relevant civil aviation authority regulations. This role requires ensuring supreme safety, security, and efficiency throughout all flight operations. The Captain provides comprehensive support and guidance to flight and cabin crew, expertly manages emergencies and ad-hoc scenarios, and maintains absolute control of the flight to achieve successful performance and project a positive corporate image.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operates assigned aircraft on scheduled routes and approved flight plans, assuming ultimate responsibility for the aircraft during operations, prioritizing safety, efficiency, and passenger comfort.
  • Ensures all flights rigorously adhere to the detailed provisions of the Airline’s Operations Manual and established regulations, consistently implementing, monitoring, and maintaining procedures for safe and seamless aircraft operation.
  • Verifies timely attendance, proper grooming, fitness, and legal compliance for self and the entire flight crew prior to assigned flights. Conducts thorough pre-flight briefings to ensure all crew members are fully informed of flight details, maintaining consistent briefing practices as per adopted procedures.
  • Collaborates effectively with First Officers, Second Officers, and the Dispatch Team before each flight to ensure flight and cabin crew are thoroughly prepared and equipped with essential information, including aircraft technical status, route preferences, weather conditions, fuel requirements, weight distribution, and role assignments.
  • Optimizes fuel efficiency and effectiveness during flight operations, always within the safety constraints detailed in the relevant sections of the Airline’s Operations Manual.
  • Oversees and directs the flight and cabin crew in conducting all required safety, security, fuel, and transit checks before, during, and after each flight. Takes decisive action and provides clear directives to the crew in response to safety or security irregularities, escalating as necessary.
  • Liaises with Maintenance Engineers to confirm aircraft technical status and suitability for flight. Engages with Maintenance Control Center (MCC) and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities to address potential concerns and identify any defects or technical issues, implementing immediate rectification or corrective measures where applicable.
  • Ensures all necessary documents and technical logs are accurately loaded with required data, adhering to Airline and civil aviation authority regulations and adopted procedures. This includes, but is not limited to, the technical logbook, journey log, and boarding sheets.
  • Confirms the Airline Operations Manual is appropriately distributed, accounted for, meticulously maintained, kept current, fully understood, and strictly complied with by all flight crew members.
  • Stays continually updated with legal requirements from various regulatory bodies, including civil aviation authorities, aircraft manufacturers (e.g., Airbus Company), and other relevant organizations pertaining to flight operations and flight crew.
  • Undertakes additional ground-based tasks, such as Safety Officer or Security Officer duties, as directed by the line manager and in accordance with the provisions of Part A of the Airline’s Operations Manual.

Qualifications & Experience

Academic, Training, and Languages:

  • Possession of an appropriate ATPL (Airline Transport Pilot License) is mandatory.
  • Successful completion of technical/psychometric assessments for Pilots, in accordance with Airline and respective civil aviation authority standards.
  • Attainment of Medical Fitness clearance for Pilots, as per Airline and respective civil aviation authority standards.
  • Essential training in safety and emergency response; a formal qualification is advantageous.
  • Basic training in airport and security procedures and regulations is an advantage.
  • Crew Resources Management (CRM) Training is considered an advantage.
  • Knowledge of IATA principles and standards relating to security is an advantage.
  • Proficiency in Aircraft systems and Microsoft Office suite.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical report writing and presentations.
  • Very good proficiency in the English Language; proficiency in other local languages of the country of employment is an advantage.

Work Experience & Skills:

  • Minimum of 4000 hours of flight experience, with a preference for Airbus A320 type rating.
  • Experience with low-cost airlines is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated acceptable industry knowledge of aircraft systems and operating procedures.
  • Proven ability and exposure to effectively handle delegated roles such as security or safety-related responsibilities, as required by Airline and respective civil aviation authority regulations.
  • Exposure to Quality Assurance (QA), Safety, Security, and Audit procedures and practices relevant to Flight Operations.
  • Capability to implement policies, procedures, and manuals in adherence to approved standards and regulations.
  • Ability to perform exceptionally in a dynamic environment with demanding work-load schedules and ad-hoc scenarios.
  • Composed, self-confident, and focused, with proven capability to handle emergencies and threats with efficiency.
  • Demonstrated skills in analyzing data, identifying operational challenges, and recommending cost-effective solutions.
  • Cost-oriented, possessing effective problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Exhibits high accuracy and meticulous attention to both results and details.
  • Utilizes technical expertise and interpersonal relations to actively support company objectives.
  • Demonstrates a strong ability to contribute to and successfully deliver against business strategy and established Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
