Pilot Job Description
Job Purpose
The Pilot is responsible for conducting assigned flights in accordance with the detailed provisions of the Airline Operational Manual and in full compliance with the respective civil aviation authority regulations. The Pilot ensures ultimate safety, security, and efficiency are achieved throughout all operated flights. This role supports and guides the flight and cabin crew, effectively handles emergencies and ad-hoc scenarios, and maintains control over the flight to ensure successful performance and uphold a positive corporate image.
Key Responsibilities
- Operates assigned aircraft according to scheduled flight plans, acting as the ultimate responsible person for the aircraft during flights, prioritizing safety, efficiency, and passenger comfort.
- Ensures assigned flights are conducted in strict accordance with the Airline’s Operations Manual and relevant regulations, continuously implementing, monitoring, and maintaining procedures for safe and smooth operations.
- Ensures timely attendance, proper grooming, and confirms the fitness and legality of self and the Flight Crew for assigned flights. Conducts pre-flight briefings to inform crew of flight details and ensures briefings are properly performed prior to each action as per procedures.
- Liaises with co-pilots (First Officer and Second Officer) and the Dispatch Team prior to each flight to ensure flight/cabin crew members are well-prepared and provided with essential information, including aircraft technical status, route preferences, weather, fuel, weight, and role distribution.
- Ensures, within safety constraints detailed in the Airline’s Operations Manual, that the aircraft is flown to optimize fuel efficiency and effectiveness during flight.
- Ensures required safety, security, fuel, and transit checks are performed by assigned Flight/Cabin crew members before, during, and after each flight. Takes necessary action and directs crew response to safety or security irregularities, escalating issues as needed.
- Collaborates with Maintenance Engineers to confirm aircraft technical status and suitability for flight, seeking support from MCC and MROs to address concerns, identify defects, and implement immediate rectification or corrective measures where applicable.
- Ensures all required documents and technical logs, including the technical logbook, journey book, boarding sheets, and reports, are loaded with accurate data as per Airline and civil aviation authority regulations and procedures.
- Ensures the Airline Operations Manual is distributed, accounted for, maintained, kept up-to-date, understood, and complied with by the Flight Crew.
- Remains current with legal requirements of relevant regulatory bodies, such as civil aviation authorities, Airbus Company, and others relating to flights and Flight Crew.
- Undertakes additional ground-based tasks, such as Safety Officer or Security Officer duties, as directed by the line manager and in accordance with the Airline’s Operations Manual.
Qualifications (Academic, Training, Languages)
- Possesses an appropriate Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL).
- Must successfully pass technical/psychometric assessments for Pilots as per Airline and civil aviation authority standards.
- Must successfully pass the Medical Fitness check-up for Pilots as per Airline and civil aviation authority standards.
- Essential training in safety and emergency response; a formal qualification is advantageous.
- Basic Airport, security procedures, and regulations training is advantageous.
- Crew Resource Management Training is considered advantageous.
- Knowledge of IATA principles and standards relating to security is advantageous.
- Proficient in Aircraft systems and Microsoft Office applications.
- Demonstrates very good written and verbal communication skills, including technical report writing and presentations.
- Very good command of the English Language; proficiency in other local languages relevant to the country of employment is advantageous.
Work Experience
- Requires a minimum of 4000 hours of flying experience; experience on the Airbus A320 is preferred.
- Experience with a low-cost airline is highly desirable.
- Possesses acceptable industry knowledge in aircraft systems and operating procedures.
- Must possess the necessary knowledge and exposure to handle delegated roles such as security or safety-related duties as required by Airline and civil aviation authority regulations.
- Exposure to QA/Safety/Security/Audit procedures and practices relevant to Flight Operations.
- Capable of implementing policies, procedures, and manuals according to approved standards and regulations.
- Capable of performing effectively in a changing environment with heavy workloads and ad-hoc scenarios.
- Maintains composure, self-confidence, and focus, capable of handling emergencies and threats efficiently.
- Demonstrates proven skills in analyzing data, identifying pitfalls, and recommending cost-effective solutions.
- Is cost-oriented, possesses effective problem-solving and decision-making skills.
